Edwin E. DeVore

HAMPTON - The funeral for Edwin E. DeVore, 54, of 18 Seavey St., was held yesterday from Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. Services were conducted in the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Kenneth G. Lawrence, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Hampton Falls, officiated. Sylvia Moulton was organist. Cremation was in the Phoenix Crematory.

Eleanor K. Spraker

MALDEN, Mass. - Eleanor K. Spraker, 92, of 70 Salem St., formerly of Newmarket and York, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at Palm Garden Nursing Home in Vero Beach, Fla., where she had moved recently to be near her daughter.

Born July 17, 1906, in Westville, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Robert Fullerton Kerr and Jean (Fraser) Kerr. She was a graduate of Pictou Academy, Pictou, Nova Scotia, and a 1928 graduate of Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia. She did graduate work at Columbia University in New York City.

For many years, she was a therapeutic dietician working at Bloomingdale Hospital, White Plains, N.Y.; Stamford Hospital, Stamford, Conn.; Colchester Hospital, Truro, Nova Scotia; and, until her retirement in 1968, at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, Melrose, Mass.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Malden. She was also a past president of the Malden Old and New; past vice president and treasurer of the Acadia Alumni Associates Inc.; former president of the New England Acadia Alumni Association; and scholarship chairwoman of that organization for 13 years.

She was a past chairwoman of the ESO and Library Services Committee of the Massachusetts Federation of Women's Clubs and was former 8th District director of the Massachusetts Federation of Women's Clubs.

She was the wife of the late Loring A. Spraker, who died May 13, 1992.

Survivors include a daughter, Melody Dahl Gabriel of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Hampton; four grandchildren, Deborah Dahl Barton of Stratford, Ontario, Deanna Dahl Rodriguez of London, Douglas A. Dahl of Wilmington, Mass. and David E. Dahl of Cheshire, Conn.; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Marguerite C. Kelly

RYE - Marguerite C. Kelly, 84, of 496 Wallis Road, died Sunday, June 20, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born July 4, 1914, in New York City, she was the daughter of James and Emma (Martin) Clarke. Raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was educated in the public schools of New York. She won a scholarship to Vassar College where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After graduating in 1935, she later earned a master's degree in education from New York University. She and her family lived in New York, Chicago and Cleveland before settling in Rye in 1959.

Her first job was with The New York Times, lecturing on current events and teaching young adults how to learn from a daily newspaper. Subsequently, she was the assistant director of cooperative education and assistant director of public relations for the New York City Board of Education.

In 1960, she resumed her career in education, teaching at Rye Elementary School and then Rye Junior High before retiring in 1976.

After retirement, she was engaged in a wide variety of volunteer activities. She was a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging in 1981. At Odyssey House in Hampton, she tutored at-risk teens. Through the Seacoast Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, she tutored in the general equivalency diploma program, and for two decades aided seniors with their Medicare forms; she also served on RSVP's board of directors. For 15 years, she served as a member of the Rye School Board. She was an original member of the board of directors of the Webster at Rye retirement community, serving from 1984 until her death. A onetime candidate for the General Court representing the Rye-New Castle district, she was active in Democratic politics.

She was the wife of the late John F. Kelly who died in 1975. The couple were married in 1942.

Survivors include three children, Richard J. Kelly of Portland, Nancy A. Kelly of Peabody, Mass., and Joan Kelly of Cambridge, Mass.; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Harry F. Hutchins

CAPE NEDDICK, Maine - Harry F. Hutchins, 96, died Sunday, June 20, 1999, at York Hospital following a brief period of illness.

Born Jan. 5, 1903, in Cape Neddick, he was the son of Grafton and Isobel Stothart Hutchins. He graduated from York High School in 1924 and attended Wentworth Institute in Boston.

A plumber by trade, he served as plumbing inspector for the town of York for 24 years. After working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II, he took over his father's lobster business, which he carried on until retiring in 1965.

He served for the York Water District and was a 50-year member of St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge.

He had a sharp and accurate memory and in later years enjoyed relating, in detail, events in York during his lifetime. He identified many photos for John Bardwell and the Old York Historical Society.

He was the husband of Doris Talpey Hutchins for 69 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Faith H. Webster of Cape Neddick; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Paul J. Beane

NEWINGTON - Paul J. Beane, 85, of 233 Nimble Hill Road, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

Born April 1, 1914, in Newington, he was the son of the late Louis C. and Abbie A. (Rollins) Beane. He attended Portsmouth High School.

Before retiring in 1974, he was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 26 years as a carpenter and shipwright.

He was a former Newington selectman, a former Budget Committee member and a charter member of the Newington Fire Department. He also served on various town committees.

He was a member of the Newington Congregational Church, the UBC Local No. 3073 and the National Skeet Shooting Association.

He was the husband of the late Doris Maryann (Ouellette) Beane.

Survivors include five children, Nancy Cansler of Hillsville, Penn., Paul (Rollie) Beane of Newington, Kathy Beane of Miami, Norman Beane of Bethel, Maine, and Susan Newcomer of Newington; six grandchildren, Gina Cansler, Karen Cansler, Jimmy Cansler, Hannah Barrett, Ian Fritz and Abbie Beane; a sister, Jessie A. Beane of Portsmouth; and a special friend, Mary House of Newington.

Edwin F. Woody

PORTSMOUTH - Edwin F. Woody, 62, of 603 Colonial Drive died Saturday, June 19, 1999, at Exeter Hospital after a battle with cancer.

Born June 19, 1937 in Omaha, Neb., he was the son of the late George and Goldie (Grothe) Woody.

In 1977, he retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant after 22 years of service. He was most recently employed by the Department of Defense as safety analyst for Europe, and had been living in Germany.

He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, the Disabled American Veterans, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was the husband of Nancy (Connors) Woody for 39 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Shelly Mokas and her husband, John, of Bedford, and Erin Woody and Al Yazbick of Portsmouth; one son, Kevin Woody of Hingham, Mass.; three grandchildren, George Mokas, Nicole Woody, and Alison Woody; two half-sisters, Dorothy Helmuth of California, and Francis Magill of Nebraska; and a half-brother, Raymond Lake of Oregon.

He was predeceased by a brother, Harry O'Dell.
