James S. Wentworth
WELLS - James S. "Sid" Wentworth, 82, of Webhannet Drive, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at York Hospital following a long period of illness.
Born Sept. 30, 1916, in Rochester, N.H., he was the son of James and Grace (Pillsbury) Wentworth. He was a 1935 graduate of Berwick High School.
During World War II, he served in the Army. He was employed as a sheet metal worker and then as a planner at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years. During the 1970s, he served as the tax assessor for the town of Wells.
He was very active in Wells town government, serving on the School Committee, School Planning Board, School Study Committee, and the School Building Committee. He also served as chairman of the School Budget Board, chairman of the board of trustees of the Wells Sanitary District, and as the fire chief of the Wells Beach Hose Co. Fire Department. He also served on the Zoning Committee and the town Budget Committee.
He was a member of the Wells Congregational Church.
He was a member of Ocean Lodge No. 142 in Wells; the Maine Consistory Valley of Portland; Kora Temple Shrine in Lewiston; and the York County Shrine Club.
He enjoyed golfing and traveling with his wife to their winter residence in Zephyrills, Fla., in their motor home.
He was the husband of Frances (Lord) Wentworth of Wells for 57 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, James Wentworth of Melrose, Mass.; and a daughter, Nancy Wentworth of Trumbull, Conn.
