Elizabeth J. Searles

CABOT, Vt. - Elizabeth Jane "Betty" (Gammon) Searles, 51, died Saturday, July 31, 1999, in her home.

Born Jan. 23, 1948, in North Adams, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Warren V. and Mary A. (Pearson) Tower. She was a resident of Kittery, Maine, and Eliot, Maine, for 32 years.

She was the wife of Donovan Searles of Cabot for two years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Jackie Carpentier of Eugene, Ore.; and Deborah Millett of Gardiner, Maine; three brothers, Ralph, Roger, and Vern Tower, all of North Adams; a sister, Rose Rand of Washington state; and a granddaughter, Suzanne Burns of Kittery.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Frederick and Richard Tower.

Robert J. McCullough Sr.

YORK BEACH - Robert J. McCullough Sr., 70, of 43 Shelton Ave., died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999 at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a lengthy period of illness.

Born Nov. 2, 1928 in Worcester, Mass., he was the son of James Francis and Blanche (Houle) McCullough. He was a 1947 graduate of South High School, Worcester.

During World War II, he served in the Navy. He was a graduate of Fitchburg State College, receiving a bachelor's degree in education in 1951 and a master's degree in education in 1953.

He was a schoolteacher for 38 years. For 22 years, he taught mechanical drawing at Burncoat Junior High School in Worcester. He retired and moved to York Beach in 1987.

He enjoyed maintaining his home, gardening and traveling.

A volunteer at the York Food Pantry for six years, he also was a member of the American Legion Post 341 of Worcester, the AARP, the Disabled American Veterans, the Massachusetts Retired Teachers Association and the Knights of Columbus.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York.

He was the husband of Ann (Hare) McCullough.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Robert J. McCullough Jr. of Southbridge, Mass., and Sean P. McCullough of Marlborough, Mass.; three daughters, Jane M. Thomson of Kennebunk, Ann M. Saltzman of York, and Marianne McCullough of Northborough, Mass.; two brothers, James McCullough of Worcester and Philip McCullough of Massena, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas, who died in 1996.

Ben A. Gagne

BERWICK - Ben A. Gagne, 46, of 12 Wendy Lane, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999 in a drowning accident.

Born in Dover, he was the son of Clement J. and Edna Gagne. He was a 1972 graduate of Marshwood High School in Eliot.

He was employed as a welder in shop No. 26 of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He had previously coached baseball and soccer in Eliot for many years. He enjoyed hunting, golfing, camping and fishing.

He was the husband of Debbie (Trueman) Gagne for 25 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Robert A. Gagne of Kittery and Stephen M. Gagne of Berwick; a daughter, Alina M. Gagne of Lebanon; two sisters, Elsie Howe of Rochester, and Carol Melton of Lucasville, Ohio; a grandson, Chevy A. Prescott; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
