Robert Shaw

EXETER - Robert Shaw, 84, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999.

For more than 50 years, he was a New Hampshire trial lawyer and was a devoted citizen of Exeter.

He was the husband of Elizabeth Shaw.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Peg Shaw of Washington, D.C., and Ronney Nadile of Lunenburg, Mass; a brother, Moe Schneiderman of Quincy, Mass.; and five grandchildren, Amy Odom of North Potomac, Md., Matthew and Zachary Nadile of Lunenburg, Judith Katz of Chicago, and Aaron Katz of East Lansing, Mich.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Beth Katz of Michigan.

Services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Freeman J. Pearl

PHOENIX - Freeman John Pearl, 81, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at the Merriville Hospital in Phoenix after a lengthy period of illness.

Born June 27, 1918, in Loudon Ridge, N.H., he was the son of the late John and Nola (Greene) Pearl. He was raised in Loudon Ridge and attended Pittsfield High School. He moved to Arizona in 1950.

He worked for Curtis Publishing in Boston; and in Arizona, he was a self-employed landscaper until retiring in 1978.

Survivors include two brothers, Arthur E. Pearl of Portsmouth and Bernard Pearl of Las Vegas; one sister, Dorothy Page of Loudon Ridge; many nieces and nephews; and longtime friend Katherine Farrell of Phoenix.

Services will be held Sept. 11, 1999, in Phoenix.

John D. Hamilton

OKEECHOBEE, Fla. - John D. Hamilton, 79, of Buckhead Ridge, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at the Okeechobee Health Care Facility.

Born Dec. 14, 1919, in Baileyville, Maine, he was the son of the late John and Blanch Hamilton. He excelled in sports during his high school years, playing baseball, football and basketball, and received many sports awards, including the Wilder Award in 1940. He attended Oklahoma State University on a sports scholarship. He lived in Portsmouth before moving to Miami in the 1950s and retired in Buckhead Ridge in 1982.

During World War II, he served in the China, Burma and India theatres of operation, where he was injured, ending his baseball career.

He was a certified welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans in Buckhead Ridge.

He was the husband of Rita Hamilton for 33 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Jaye Hamilton and her husband, John Jerome, of Bath, Mich., and Kathy Hartsfield of Okeechobee; three granddaughters, Anna Dematais of San Francisco, and Theresa Hartsfield and Shena Hartsfield, both of Okeechobee; two grandsons, John Paul and Benjamin Jerome, both of Bath; one great-grandson; and a special niece.

He was predeceased by a son, Paul (Topper) Hamilton; and his sister, Harriet Jameson, and her husband, Walter.

The funeral will be in Florida.

Mary Jean Gleason

RYE BEACH - A memorial Mass for Mary Jean Gleason, 97, of Exeter and formerly of North Hampton, who died Aug. 30, 1999, was held Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at Saint Theresa Church. The Rev. John R. Ullrich, pastor of Saint Anthony's Church, Boston, was the celebrant.

Judith Kish was the organist; Mary Louise Arcidi was the cantor; and the Rev. Robert H. Thompson, Phelps minister at Phillips Church, Exeter, was the soloist. Salvator DiVincenzo was acolyte and offered the readings. Alessandra Domina, daughter of Mrs. Gleason, offered the eulogy. Nina Domina Baker and Christian Cilluffo were ushers.

Private interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Northampton, Mass.

Barbara J. Maroon

HAMPTON - The funeral for Barbara J. Maroon, 68, of 32 Brookside Drive, Stratham, who died Aug. 19, 1999, was held Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. Monsignor Paul Gleason, retired priest from the Portland diocese, and the Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, were the celebrants.

Marion Arnaldy was the organist, and Patricia Mackensen was the soloist. Family and friends offered words of remembrance.

Cremation followed the Mass in the Phoenix Crematory.

Pallbearers were Robert Harkins, Robert LePage, Carlton Wass, Al Fornier, Jerry Howard and Francis Laurence.

Frederic S. Bunce

KITTERY - Frederic Standish Bunce, 85, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

Born July 8, 1914, in Hartford, Conn., he was the son of Arthur and Emma Louise Standish Bunce. He graduated from Loomis in 1933 and Dartmouth College in 1937. He lived in Brewster, N.Y.; Norwalk and Wilton, Conn.; and Kittery.

For 38 months during World War II, he served in the South Pacific. A captain, he was the executive manager of the 33rd Squadron, 22nd Bombardment Group of the 5th Air Force. He served as lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserves for a total of 22 years of military service.

He worked for Connecticut General LIfe Insurance, Atlantic Aviation Corp., and as a district manager in the communications division of General Electric Co. until retiring in 1978.

A Mason, he served as a deacon at the Wilton Congregational Church in Connecticut. He was an active alumnus of The Loomis School and Dartmouth College, attending almost every reunion. He was also active with the Retired Officer's Organization and with General Electric retirees. For 17 years, he volunteered at the York seniors center doing tax returns.

He was the husband of Mildred Tyrol. The couple were married in 1946.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one brother, James M. Bunce of Hartford; one son, James S. Bunce of Phippsburg, Maine; two daughters, Barbara Louise Clark of Denver and Cynthia Bunce Kleeman of Bedford, N.H.; two granddaughters, Lindsay and Tracy Kleeman; two grandsons, Mathew G. Clark and Parker Barnes Bunce; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the memorial fund of the First Parish Congregational Church of York.

A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.

James D. Platt, Jr.

HAMPTON - James D. "Jidd" Platt Jr., 60, of 9 Hampton Towne Estates, died suddenly Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at his home.

Born Feb. 14, 1939, in Lawrence, Mass., he was the son of Ruth (O'Connor) Nervi of Santa Rosa, Calif., and the late James D. Platt. He was raised in Andover, Mass., and was a graduate of Andover High School, where he was a three-letter athlete. He attended the University of Connecticut on a football scholarship. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and received his master's degree in education from Salem State College. A former resident of Newburyport, Mass., he had resided in Hampton since 1988.

He served a tour with the Navy.

An educator for many years, he started his teaching career in the Watts section of Los Angeles. He served the Boxford, Mass., school system for 30 years as an elementary teacher, guidance counselor and principal of the Cole School. He was teaching at Spofford Pond School. He was also employed part time for the Hampton Police Department in dispatch as a communication specialist.

He was a life member of the National Education Association; former negotiator and career member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association; member of the Boxford Teachers Association; and longtime member of the Dalton Club in Newburyport.

He was the husband of Sheila A. (Sciaba) Platt for 14 years.

In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include one son, Daniel T. Platt and his wife, Jennifer, of Boston; two stepdaughters, Kendall Daly and her husband, Dereck, of Sharon, Mass., and Brook Dennen of San Rafael, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
