John K. Tabor

John K. Tabor, 78, died Sept. 6, 1999, following a stroke. He was an attorney and former U.S. undersecretary of commerce. He was the father of John K. Tabor Jr. of Portsmouth, publisher of the Herald.

A native of Pittsburgh, Mr. Tabor served in two Republican administrations in Harrisburg during the 1960s. He was a 1943 Yale graduate and received his L.L.B. from Harvard Law School in 1952. In World War II, he was a Navy lieutenant in command of a fleet mine sweeper.

He is survived by his wife, Kate Williams Tabor; his two sons, John of Portsmouth and William H. Tabor of Alexandria, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Geneva M. "Jean" Tobin

HAMPTON - Geneva M. "Jean" Tobin, 66, of 6 Roberts Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at Exeter Hospital after a brief period of illness.

Born April 3, 1933, in Augusta, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Alcide and Emily (Nadeau) Cote. Raised in Augusta, she had resided in Hampton for the past 29 years, moving there from Scarborough, Maine.

She attended Cony High School in Augusta and had worked for several years in her father's restaurant.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton.

She was the wife of Dennis H. Tobin of Hampton for 36 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Shawn D. Tobin of Rye; two daughters, Emily R. Carroll of Exeter, and Kari J. Morrill of Raymond; three grandchildren, Emma Jean Morrill, Owen Carroll and Gillian Carroll; two brothers, Carlton Cote of Augusta, Maine, and Alton Cote of China, Maine; a sister, Carmeline LaVerdiere of Lynn, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Rose Cote, in 1989.

Josephine Trefethen

HAMPTON - Mrs. Josephine (Philbrick) Trefethen, 99, of 22 Tuck Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at the Seacoast Health Center in Hampton.

Born July 22, 1900, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Esra and Nellie Philbrick. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School's Class of 1919.

She was a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and served in the Civil Defense during World War II.

She was a member of the Bethany Congregational Christian Church of Rye, the Rye Fire Auxiliary, and the Rye Dining Needle Club.

She was the wife of the late Norris Trefethen.

Survivors include two sons, Eugene N. Trefethen of Dover, and Melvin D. Trefethen of North Hampton; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
