Dorothy V.C. Wood

EAST KINGSTON — Dorothy V.C. (Smith) Wood, 92, of 5 Rowell Cove Road, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000 at Dover Rehabilitation Center, Dover.

She was born in Plainfield, N.J., attended local schools and graduated from Plainfield High School. She had been a resident of East Kingston since 1994.

A resident of Brickton, N.J. for most of her life, Mrs. Wood worked as a legal secretary for several law firms and also operated an antique doll hospital which was known as the Maydor Doll Hospital.

She volunteered as a "gray lady" at the Veteran's Administration Hospital near her home and also collected antique dolls. She was also a member of the Brettonwoods Property Owner's Association.

Mrs. Wood was predeceased by her husband Russell Wood.

She is survived by her daughter Jane Query and her husband William of Plaistow; a sister, Gloria Arrington of California; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Private services were held at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, Plaistow, with burial in the Alpine Cemetery, Somerville, N.J.

Joanne Drake

TRENTON, Me. — Joanne Drake, 70, of 1778 Bayside Road, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 at her home.

She was born Oct. 11, 1929 in Brockton, Mass., the daughter of the late Una and Frank Tonis.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Philip S. Drake; a son, Frank Abbot Drake and his wife Beth of Rye Beach; a daughter, Victoria Smallidge and her husband David of Lamoine, Maine; a sister, Patricia Atkin of Darien, Conn.; and five grandchildren, Jessica Caruso and Rachel Smallidge of Lamoine, Maine, and Zachary, Collin and Liza Drake of Rye Beach.

A remembrance gathering will be held Oct. 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. at her daughter's home, 510 Douglas Highway, Lamoine, Maine. A graveside service will be held Friday, Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. at the Rye Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Hancock County Hospice or your local hospice, the SPCA or The American Cancer Society.

Arrangements were by Direct Cremation of Maine, Belfast, Maine.

Duncan M. Mitchel

HAMPTON — Duncan M. Mitchel, 73, of 70 Carolan Ave., died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, Mass.

He was born Dec. 31, 1926 in Baltimore, Md., the son of the late Charles W. and Isabel (Murray) Mitchel and was raised in Westfield, N.J. He had resided for many years in Gillette, N.J. before retiring to Hampton in 1997.

Mr. Mitchel worked for many years as an electrical engineer at the former Bell Labs in Murray Hill, N.J.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Merchant Marine.

Mr. Mitchel was an avid skier, hiker and enjoyed mountain climbing and traveling. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hampton and a former member of the Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church in New Jersey. He was also a former volunteer ambulance driver for the Longhill Township Rescue Squad.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sally (Gerhart) Mitchel of Hampton; a son, Robert D. Mitchel of San Jose, Calif.; a daughter, Margaret L. Mitchel of Northampton, Mass.; and a grandson, Martin Mitchel.

Services were held Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Hampton. The Rev. Carroll Moore officiated. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Westfield, N.J.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, Mass. 01701.

Arrangements were by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Eunice G. O'Brien

RYE — Eunice G. O'Brien, 92, of 1752 Ocean Blvd., died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 at Webster at Rye.

She was born Aug. 28, 1908 in Bangor, Maine, the daughter of the late Francis and Mary (Kelleher) Golden and was a graduate of Bangor High School.

Mrs. O'Brien worked as an administrative secretary for Abbot Academy in Andover, Mass., Phillips Academy in Andover and retired from the Senior Citizens Council of Portsmouth in 1996 at the age of 88.

She was a lifelong summer resident of Rye before moving here year round from Andover. she was a communicant of St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach.

Mrs. O'Brien was predeceased by her husband Joseph R. O'Brien who died in 1964.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Imboden and her husband Nicolas of Bern, Switzerland and Rye; a sister-in-law, Ellenora D. O'Brien of North Andover, Mass. and Rye; four grandchildren; a niece and nephew, Norah and George Predaris of Rye; and several other nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 6 at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Private burial will be in the Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Senior Citizens Council of Portsmouth, 1 Junkins Ave., Portsmouth, N.H. 03801.
