Override of SB 153 was a show of compassion
7/21/00 - In the old "Andy Griffith Show" there was a recurring character we knew as Otis. Otis would check himself into his cell every Saturday after a night of drinking. Otis had access to the keys of the jail, and after he spent the night in the safety of the town clink, he'd wake up in the morning and have some of Aunt Bea's home-cooked food. Now, the idea that Otis would shuffle into the jailhouse and settle down for the night is rather quaint, of course, but we could look at Otis and the way he was treated by the Mayberry sheriff as a very powerful and positive symbol of the compassion and understanding government can be capable of.
