Alfred J. Bergeron
UNITY, Maine — Alfred J. Bergeron, 78, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at his home after a sudden illness.
He was born Nov. 20, 1921, in Rollinsford, the son of the late Edward and Aderilda (Cayer) Bergeron.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Mr. Bergeron was a machinist for USM Bailey Corp., working at the former Amesbury, Mass., and Seabrook plants. He was also a former police officer in Amesbury.
The widower of Gertrude (Osgood) Bergeron, who died in 1992, he is survived by two sons, Albert Bergeron of Hampstead and Richard Bergeron of Sandown; two daughters, Linda Skovron of Amesbury and Nadine April of Raymond; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roland Bergeron of Florida and George Bergeron of Amesbury; and one sister, Elaine Theberge of Amesbury.
Funeral services were held Monday in the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, Amesbury. Burial was in Union Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Helen Ebbeson
EXETER — Helen (Selwood) Ebbeson, 87, of RiverWoods Drive, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at her home.
She was born Aug. 3, 1913, in Perry, Maine, the daughter of the late Harry and Marion (Cederwall) Selwood.
She was a graduate of Eastport High School and the University of Southern Maine, Gorham.
Mrs. Ebbeson taught in Brewer and Orono, Maine, schools before coming to the Portsmouth area in 1943.
She was on the Board of Directors and membership chairman for the Seacoast Community Concerts Association; president of the Portsmouth YWCA; was a member of R.S.V.P.; and with her husband was the editor of the book "Living Simply."
Mrs. Ebbeson was active in church work at the parish level at St. John's Episcopal Church and Christ Episcopal Church; at the diocesan level in New Hampshire and at the national level as a member of the National Episcopal Hunger Committee and two committees of the National Council of Churches. She was on the staffs of the Episcopal Diocese of N.H.'s Youth Program, Clergy Deployment and leadership training in education.
She worked with the Rocking County Neighborhood Youth Corps as a counselor and later as its director.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Eric N. Ebbeson of Exeter; two children, Eric Ebbeson Jr. of Hampton and Kristin Ebbeson of Rollinsford; four grandchildren; and one brother, Merrill Selwood of Pembrooke, Maine.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Christ Episcopal Church, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.
Arrangements are by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home, Portsmouth.
Barbara H. Finan
PORT ORANGE, Fla. — Barbara Hammond Finan, 63, of Long Meadow Court, died July 25, 2000, at Riverview Assisted Living Facility.
She was born in Portsmouth the daughter of Lewis and Marion (Noyes) Hammond. She moved to Port Orange in 1987 from Stratham.
She is survived by two sons, Calvin Emery of Natick, Mass., and Bruce Emery of San Antonio, Tex.; two stepdaughters, Gaye Tarallo of North Easton, Mass., and April Fay of Bow; one stepson, Mark Finan of Sacramento, Calif.; seven grandchildren; one sister, Eleanor Crow of Stratham; one brother, Stephen Hammond of Hampton; one stepbrother, Roger Hammond of Dunedin, Fla.; one aunt, Edith Hammond of Raymond; her companion, Frank Walpole of Port Orange; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by one sister, Blenda Hammond; and one stepson, Guy Finan.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Aug. 19, at 4 p.m. in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham, with the Rev. Walter Johnston officiating.

M.E. Irene Gagnon
BRENTWOOD — Mary Elizabeth Irene Gagnon died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home where she had been a resident since 1996.
She was born in 1919 the daughter of the late Edward A. and Elizabeth (Fortin) Gagnon, and was a longtime resident of Marblehead, Mass. She maintained a summer home at Hampton Beach for many years which became her permanent residence in 1992.
She was a 1937 graduate of Marblehead High School and a 1941 graduate of Salem Normal School. She received her master's degree from Boston University in 1951.
Miss Gagnon taught school in the Beverly, Mass. schools for many years, retiring to Gulfport, Fla. in 1976. Her career in education included a 1959-1960 stint at the American Army Base School in Okinawa. She had previously taught for a few years in Vermont.
She is survived by one sister, Flora Pepper of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Olive Gagnon of Phoenix, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews; and several grand- and great-grand nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Roland, Grace, Romeo, John, Raymond, Ida Jalbert and Albertine Belanger; one niece, Catherine Gagnon; and one nephew, Donald Pepper.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday in Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Marblehead. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem, Mass.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society, 1 Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA 02139-1562.
Arrangements were by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.
Stanley J. Gazda
NEWBURYPORT, Mass. — Stanley J. Gazda, 85, of 199 Low St., died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at his home.
He was born May 8, 1915, in Newmarket the son of the late Andrew and Anila (Rajchel) Gazda.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Gazda was a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and later was a special police officer in Newburyport. He had also worked for D.J. O'Brien in Seabrook and for Oakland Industries of Amesbury, Mass.
He was a former member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Polish Club, all of Newburyport.
The widower of Jane P. (Zolnierczyk) Gazda, he is survived by one son and his wife, Richard S. and Everette "Peach" Gazda of Rye; one daughter and her husband, Arlene and James Walker of Stratham; three grandchildren; two sisters, Bertha Noiles of Portsmouth and Mary Maziarz of Middletown, Conn.; and one brother, Edward Gazda of Vero Beach, Fla.
He was predeceased by one brother, Walter Gazda.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday in St. Louis de Gonzague Church, Newburyport. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Newburyport.
Arrangements were by the Twomey-LeBlanc Funeral Home, Newburyport.
Irene M. Gerrish
HAMPTON — Irene M. (James) Gerrish, 93, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at Seacoast Health Center following a period of failing health.
She was born July 28, 1907, in Hardwich, Vt., the daughter of the late William and Zelina (Warren) James. She lived in the Lowell, Mass., area before coming to Hampton.
Mrs. Gerrish owned and operated a rooming house on West Sixth Street, Lowell, for many years. She had previously worked as a telephone operator in Bellows Falls, Vt.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed walking and her family.
She is survived by two daughters, Rita Dow of North Hampton and Harriet Gerrish of Wrentham, Mass.; one son, Warren Gerrish of Woburn, Mass.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Warren James of Somerville, Mass., and Merle James of Connecticut; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by one brother, Gerald James.
Private burial will be held in Tewksbury Cemetery, Tewksbury, Mass.

Christiane M. Legere
NORTH HAMPTON — Christiane M. (Arsenault) Legere, 52, of 115 Lafayette Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, in Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford, Maine, after being stricken ill in Saco, Maine.
She was born March 28, 1948, in Paris, France, was raised in Millbury, Mass., and resided in Oxford, Mass., before moving to New Hampshire in 1980.
She was a 1966 graduate of Marian High School, Worcester, Mass., and attended Salter Secretarial School, Worcester.
Mrs. Legere was a member of St. James Church, Portsmouth, and a former member of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, Millbury.
She enjoyed gardening and cooking and was a volunteer at animal shelters in the Hampton area for several years.
She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Leo R. Legere; three daughters, Stephanie E. Reynolds of Apex, N.C., and twin daughters, Renee A. Legere and Michelle Y. Legere, both of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and her mother, Georgette Y. (Labbe) Arsenault of Millbury.
She was predeceased by her father, Charles J. Jaumont; and her adoptive father, Roger L. Arsenault.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Turgeon Funeral Home, 56 Main St., Millbury.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 10 Waters St., Millbury. Burial will follow in Central Cemetery, Millbury.

Annette C. Maxwell
NOTTINGHAM — Annette C. Maxwell, 62, of Stage Road, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in Exeter Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was born May 10, 1938, in Savannah, Ga., the daughter of the late John M. and Floy Bell (Hodgers) Godbee. She had resided in Exeter for 20 years before moving to Nottingham 20 years ago.
She was a graduate of North Miami (Fla.) High School.
Mrs. Maxwell was a former member of the Kensington American Legion Post No. 105 Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Clyde D. Maxwell Sr. of Nottingham; two daughters and their husbands, Lisa and Tom Klingelhoefer of Exeter and Linda and Mark Dorobiala of West Nottingham; two sons, Clyde D. Maxwell Jr. of Nottingham and David A. Maxwell of Gig Harbor, Wash.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; four sisters, Jewel Brown of West Palm Beach, Fla., Mary Ruth Kirkland of Gulf Breeze, Fla., Joann Scealf of Marietta, Ga., and Frances Arnet of Lake Worth, Fla.; two brothers, Willard Godbee of Gulf Breeze and John "Skeet" Godbee Jr. of Savannah, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at noon in the funeral home. Burial will be in Exeter Cemetery.

Chester R. Pynn
HAVERHILL, Mass. — Chester R. Pynn, 87, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, in Hale Hospital, Haverhill.
He was born Jan. 7, 1913, in Manchester, Mass., the son of the late Arnold and Mary (Martin) Pynn. He resided in Wakefield and Melrose, Mass., before retiring to Exeter.
Mr. Pynn was a maintenance carpenter for Draper Labs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass., for 25 years. He was a shipfitter at the Charlestown Navy Yard during World War II.
He was actively involved in scouting and served as scout master of the local troop in Wakefield.
The widower of Marjorie (Burns) Pynn, who died in 1979, he is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Carol and Lawrence Baker of South Hampton and Beverly and Richard Hogg of Newburyport, Mass.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn McLeod of Groton, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury, Mass.
Private interment will be in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree, Mass.
