Santa's helpers rock out and pile on the toys

Santa had many helpers on Saturday, Dec. 11, as community members came out to hear bands and packed not just venues throughout the city, but also the gift collection bags and boxes slated for Dover Fire Department's contribution to the 32nd Annual Seacoast Firefighters Toy Bank Drive.
Dover Adult Learning Center workshops set for January

The Dover Adult Learning Center of Strafford County has organized a new winter workshop program geared to personal enrichment courses.
Courses will be offered in floral watercolors, Web-based genealogical research, mosaic design, virtual museum tours and the creation of Russian Matryoshka dolls ("nesting" dolls).
Food bank to benefit from paper recycling

Pinard Waste Systems is raising money for the New Hampshire Food Bank by collecting recyclable paper products.
Old newspapers, magazines, phone books and office paper can be dropped off at Harley-Davidson dealerships across the Seacoast. Pinard will collect the products, recycle them and give 100 percent of the proceeds to the New Hampshire Food Bank.
Dover stores refuse to sell tobacco to kids in police checks

Teenage members of Dover's Youth to Youth program volunteered to assist the Dover Police Department in conducting compliance checks in November, and Dover stores that sell tobacco products had a perfect score in refusing to sell cigarettes to underage kids.
STA plans holiday concert

The annual Christmas concert at St. Thomas Aquinas High School will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 7 p.m., and will feature a wide variety of contemporary and traditional arrangements. Songs will be performed by various St. Thomas vocal and instrumental ensembles, all under the direction of music director Daryl Robertson.

New Hampshire State Board of Education to hold public hearings on new education standards

The public is invited to attend a hearing regarding the implementation of new standards for public school approval. Among the major initiatives being discussed is one that directs all districts to offer kindergarten opportunities for 5-year-olds, smaller class sizes, broader routes to alternative compliance and a number of high school reforms, including an increase of credits needed to graduate.

The Red-bellied Woodpecker comes to eat our hulled sunflower seeds several times a day now, so I've been able to get a very good look at him. I'm still startled when he zooms in to the feeder because he's not one of the birds I'm used to seeing here. Over the past few weeks, I've had conversations with several people who asked me how I could tell it is a Red-bellied Woodpecker, and that has led me to think about how to identify birds.

The Dover Public Library has recently added the Portland Museum of Art to its already extensive list of area museums. The passes allow free admission for two adults and six children. The library can only distribute one pass per day, so make your reservations in advance by calling the library at 516-6050.
Christmas traditions have changed through the years
I love Christmas. Every year I tell myself that I am going to cut back. There's not a lot of money, the grandkids are getting older, and I'm tired. But then I find something in November that is just right for Brittany, and I'm off and running.

The last meeting was held on Nov. 11 at St. John's Methodist Church at 26 Cataract Ave., Dover. We celebrated our 35th year with a large cake and a plaque from National AARP, congratulating our Chapter No. 611 for being incorporated for 35 years.
