Timberlane students help to Make-A-Wish

PLAISTOW - This holiday season, Timberlane student council is in the process of assisting the state’s Make-A-Wish Foundation of New Hampshire, with the "Adopt an Angel’ program. The organization is selling paper angels for $2, with all proceeds going toward the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Each angel displays a unique story of a child whose wish has been granted by The Make-A-Wish Foundation. For more than 20 years, the foundation has helped fulfill wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. More than 127,000 children worldwide have been granted wishes by the organization. The New Hampshire branch of the foundation has granted more than 400 requests, through the help of numerous volunteers and donations as well as the Adopt-an-Angel program.

With 250 angels to sell, the student council is hoping to raise $500 to be donated this holiday season.

"We are supported by the N.H. credit unions who help sponsor the Adopt-An-Angel program," says Donna Parker, director of development with the Make-A-Wish-Foundation. "There are many schools that are working with us.

"We have a program called the ‘Kids Wish for Kids,’ where schools host a fund-raising event including the Adopt-An-Angel. We have approximately 65 schools that participate in our program. We are hoping to increase that within the next few years to over 100 schools," Parker said.

Fern Strasser, a junior at Timberlane Regional High School and coordinator of the project, is hoping students will be generous in assisting those in need.

"With the holiday season, students will want to get involved to help those who are less fortunate," says Fern Strasser, "We’re encouraging the rest of the council to sell angels to friends and family."

One story is of a 13 year-old girl named Taylor, who has acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Her wish was to ride a major rollercoaster, and Make-A-Wish made this come true by sending her to Six Flags in California.

"Each wish can cost between $5,000 to $10,000 dollars," Parker explained. "Every donation brings us closer to making a wish come true."

Anyone interested in purchasing an angel can call Jennifer Libby-Barth at Timberlane’s main office at 382-6541.
