Police called to 6 scenes

NEWTON - Sunday night’s snowstorm left 8 inches of snow on the ground and several vehicles stranded as six accidents occurred in Newton in a matter of four hours.

From noon until 4 p.m. Sunday, Officer Michael Jewett scrambled to respond to accidents happening all over town.

"He had so many at once, he had to be assisted by mutual aid towns," said Police Chief Larry Streeter.

Most of the accidents were minor, according to Streeter, and none resulted in serious injury.

According to police logs, accidents occurred at:

  • 12:25 p.m. at the intersection of South Main Street and Tara Lane.

  • 12:44 p.m. at the intersection South Main Street and Peaslee Crossing Road. (Plaistow police responded.)

  • 12:47 p.m. on North Main Street.

  • 1:27 p.m. on South Main Street.

  • 3:25 p.m. on Whittier Street.

  • 4 p.m. on South Main Street.

Streeter said the town typically only has one officer on duty at all times, so the town has to rely on mutual aid to respond to any calls that occur while the officer is occupied.
