Row the way of Thoreau
"At mid-afternoon, we embarked on the Penobscot. Our birch was 19½ feet long by 2½ feet at the widest part, and 14 inches deep within, both ends alike, and painted green, which Joe thought affected the pitch and made it leak."
So begins Henry David Thoreau's account of his travels down the West Branch of the Penobscot River in the mid-1850s. Relying on more modern gear, our trip — my 12-year-old daughter, three friends and myself — was to follow the same purpose as Thoreau's: to explore the wilds of Maine and see how "the pine lives and grows and spires, lifting its evergreen arms to the light."

The modern canoe
In his classic work, "The Maine Woods," this is how Henry David Thoreau described the boat in which he traveled: "It was 18Ό feet long by 2 feet 6½ inches wide in the middle, and 1 foot deep within, as I found by measurement, and I judged that it would weigh not far from 80 pounds."
